IMG_0558The ESSA Interdivisional Championships took place in Sunderland over the weekend of 27-28 June. Three GCSC swimmers, Craig Munden (18), Mollie Perks (15) and Eddie Maddocks (14) were selected to be part of the South West Region team.

There are eight regional teams who take part in these championships each year – North West, North East, West Midlands, East Midlands, South West, London, East and South East. There are 3 age groups – Junior (years 7 & 8), Intermediate (years 9 & 10) and Senior (years 11, 12 & 13) and the competition is usually pretty tough! This year was the last ESSA Long course (LC) competition. The changes in British Swimming will mean that future Interdivisional championships will be short course (SC) and held in October each year.

Craig has been competing at the ESSA gala for quite a few years and this was his last year to represent his school – Sir Thomas Rich’s School. Craig had 2 individual events and 2 relays over the weekend. In the 200m back he won a bronze medal in a time of 2:09.86 which was a 3 second LC pb. However the highlight of his weekend was a long awaited Gold in the 200m fly in a time of 2:05.73 to become English Schools Champion for 2015. Craig was also part of the Senior boys 4 x 100m free and 4 x 100m medley relays. The team won Gold in the free relay and bronze in the medley relay. The South West Senior boys team were also delighted to win their category based on points accumulated over the weekend. Craig was very proud to be presented with the trophy on behalf of the team.

Mollie also had a great weekend winning a bronze in the 100m free in a lifetime best of 59.10. Mollie was also part of the Intermediate girls relay team winning silver in the 4 x 100m medley. She was delighted with both of her swims.

Eddie competed in the 200m back as the youngest competitor in his event. He swam a new personal best time of 2:22.49 which was a 2 second LC pb. Eddie also formed part of the Intermediate boys 4 x 100m free relay which finished just outside the medals in 4th place.

A very successful medal haul of 2 golds, 1 silver and 3 bronze from the weekend for team GCSC. Well done to all 3 swimmers.
