YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012.

Bank Holiday weekend in Plymouth 5th to 7th May. Not the normal beach and Ice Cream trip, but three days high level competition at the new Plymouth Life Centre, boasting its new 50m pool. In truth the facility was superb, and so what can be a challenging three days, was actually a good experience in many ways.

All the female swimmers in the team, certainly thought Tom Daley being there training for the 2012 Olympic Diving events was certainly a major plus!

Nuneaton Relay

Nuneaton Relay Gala – 7 January 2012

GCSC swimmers and supporters turned out in force to take part in the Nuneaton Relay Gala at Pingles Leisure Centre on Saturday evening.  In fact the team of swimmers, and supporters was so large we had to hire a full size coach and a 24 seater mini bus.  A fantastic first in recent years!

We arrived in the nick of time for a 6pm warm up and were drawn in Lane 2.   With an age as at 31 December 2012 we had some very excited 8 year olds in the team competing in their first gala for GCSC.   Fortunately we had plenty of older swimmers to show them the ropes and look out for them on poolside.

Being an all relay gala, the emphasis was definitely on fun!   The pool complex was packed with a huge number of swimmers, coaches, chaperones and officials on poolside and each team having a full set of supporters cheering them on.The combination of relay events was interesting, having mixed boys and girls and a butterfly and breast stroke relay team.

We didn’t really know what to expect from the competition although we knew that the Nuneaton & Bedworth and Kingsbury Aquarius teams would be strong from our experience at Nuneaton League.

Points were pretty even after event 12 with GCSC in 2nd place.  By event 24 we had dropped to 3rd place but a late rally of 1st and 2nd place finishes saw us finish in 2nd place.   We ended up with a total of 10 1st place,  5 2nd place and 8 3rd place finishes.

 Final points as follows:

This was not a night for individual glory but a chance for our swimmers to work together in teams to fight for every point.

With a total of 23 top 3 place finishes out of 36 races it was teamwork at its best.

Special mention to our newest and youngest members of Team GCSC – Katie Estelrich, Mary Pang, Lily Reichwald, Ellie Jones, Oliver Wheatley and Trafford Russell who are all just 8 years old and Megan Harries age 9. You were all fantastic and gave it your all.

Thanks go to our coaches Andy and Jane, our chaperones, officials and also to all our parent supporters for making it a great night for our swimmers.

And finally.... well done to all our swimmers from the youngest to the oldest in Team GCSC.  Two coaches full of happy but tired swimmers returned to Gloucester late on Saturday night.

Four Seasons Gala

Four Seasons Gala @ GL1 on Sat 17 Dec

A great night was had by all as our Swim Skills swimmers took part in the Four Seasons Gala at GL1.  This is a novice gala and a great opportunity for our younger swimmers to experience a gala in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.    It was our turn to host this gala and we were joined by teams from Tewkesbury, Hereford and Cinderford.  Soundwell SC also participated as our guests but they could not score any points along with a 2nd team of GCSC swimmers.

There were some great swims on the night with all 4 teams battling it out for each and every point.   On top of some great individual events, the GCSC relay teams swam really well together.   Biggest PB for the GCSC girls was Sophie Clink (12) in the 50m fly with a 10.41 sec PB and for the boys Alex James (11) in the 50m free with a 7.20 sec PB.   Congratulations to you both.

The atmosphere was fantastic with plenty of noise coming from the parents and supporters watching and a definite festive feel to the event.

A nail biting finish with a 2nd place finish for GCSC in the Cannon and the final points were being totalled (thank you Charlotte!).    Final points as follows:

Congratulations to Tewkesbury SC and thanks to Hereford, Cinderford and Soundwell for making it a great evening for all.

There were many people who helped on the night including our 8 Young Volunteers, Tombola sales men (Alex and Matt), officials, chaperones, parent helpers and of course our fantastic Swim Skills coach Jane.  Above all heartfelt thanks to Ruth Hepburn who worked tirelessly behind the scenes (as she always does) to organise this gala to ensure everything went like clockwork on the night.

GCSC also raised a fantastic £100 on the night to go towards the Luke Jeffries Trust which is a charity dear to our hearts.

An evening full of fun and laughter with great swimming and some fantastic PB’s!  Well done to you all.

County 800 M - GL1

800m County Championships

The 2011/12 County Championships kicked off in style for GCSC on Sunday 11 Dec at GL1 with the 800m distance event.   This is the first year that the distance events haven’t been licenced due to the distance events taking place in a different calendar year (2011) to the remaining events in Feb/Mar 2012.  However the competition was as tough as ever with most Swimming Clubs in Gloucestershire taking part.

GCSC were represented by 21 swimmers.

Cardiff Welsh Open

The Welsh Capital Open meet, is a good standard event with many team's coming from all over the country , 54 teams in total with 700 plus swimmers over 3 days. A good smatering of internationals, including the host club Cardiff's, GB internationals looking well tanned and a distraction to some!

Looking from the spectator area it was really heartening to see the great team spirit. Interaction between all swimmers and support for each other before and after races showed they value each other's successes alongside their own, additionally the support from the coaching team should not be underestimated, thanks to Andy & Jane.

Thanks should also go to the background support from Bernice Michaels who does all the pre event liasion on behalf of the Club when each of our swimmers wants to enter these events.
